Reunion Marathon!
5/26/02 Wyoming Marathon
“We are looking forward to hosting the 25th Annual Wyoming Marathon Races on May 26th.  The Fifty States members will love the Little America Hotel.  It is surrounded by a golf course and has an Olympic size swimming pool.  It is an easy 40 mile drive to the start along Interstate 80.  We will have a nice pasta feed and 50 States Marathon Club meeting Saturday night at the hotel.  One of the perks is that all runners will receive a complimentary copy of the May/June issue of Marathon & Beyond which features stories on the South Pole Marathon.  We will also have forms for the 2003 North Pole Marathon.  I want to wish everyone safe travels and look forward to sharing another event together.”  - Brent Weigner, Race Director
Check out http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/marathon/ for sign up information.

New Marathons
Des Moines Marathon is scheduled for 10/06/02, and it’s new this year.  All 50 States Marathon Club members receive a $10 discount off the cost of the race.  Check out the website at www.desmoinesmarathon.com./

City of Trees, Boise, Idaho (11/3/02), www.cityoftreesmarathon.com.

Reunions, Where?
We have several criteria for reunion marathons.  Among them:  Amenities offered to 50 staters by the race; ease getting into the airport; race should be of a moderate size; cover all quarters of the United States.

Under consideration for the rest of the year:  Durango (10/13 – www.durangomarathon.com); Des Moines (10/6); and Tulsa (11/23).

We are looking at Florida Gulf Beaches Marathon, scheduled for February 16, 2003 as our first quarter reunion for 2003.  Look for details in the next newsletter.

Suggestions for future reunion marathons are welcomed.

TRAVEL TIPS:
(We will have a recurring section called travel tips.  This is anything that makes travel more efficient, easier, or cheaper.)  Your ideas will be welcomed:
· Use the schedule page on the website www/50statesmarathonclub.com. Who can you travel with/room with?
· Study maps and look for alternate destination cities.  You can save a bundle!
· Carry a travel pillow.  Your Newsletter person prefers the Bucky, a bargain at $25.  You can sleep ANYWHERE with this!
· If you have to catch a flight directly after the race, is there someone staying later whose room you can shower in?
· Drylete or other running friendly clothing that dry easily can be washed out using hotel shampoos – they are soap, after all.  Rewearing them saves on luggage.
· Wear your 50 States Marathon Club clothing to identify yourself – meet friends and influence people!

Several members have offered additional choices for doubles.  Thanks to Bill Whipp, Chuck Savage, Jerry Herndon,  and Art Stanger!  When you send this information, please include the full title of the marathon and the city and state where it is located.   If your selection did not make the newsletter, it may have been because I could not verify the information/did not have the full marathon name, city, or state.    For members who are interested, check dates carefully with the respective websites and applications, in case changes have been made.

Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon Report (Partial, submitted by Jim Rader)
First off, I'd say without equivocation the OKC Memorial is a keeper.  The event is superbly organized and because its association with the Memorial the money flows in to put on a 1st rate, top of the line marathon.  The OKC doesn't offer prize money so it doesn't draw the world class marathoners (the overall winning time was about 2:38 and the 1st women was about 3:05).  I'm guessing that the OKC is not about money - it is about the memorial and "Celebrate Life" (a slogan I saw a lot of).  As long as the sponsor money is there, plan on a special experience if you ever decide to run it.

At the finish line - a finishers medal, space blanket, photo opportunities, lots of bananas, oranges, sports food bars, and the real surprise was a special finishers T-shirt on top of the T-shirt that you pick up with your race packet.  The finishers T-shirt has a logo on the front over the heart
and a larger logo on the back - no advertising.  The T-shirt handed out with the race packet has  cool logo on the front and the back is loaded with all of the sponsors.   I finished feeling very good.  Not beat up.  Could of gone out dancing.

Jim has great things to say about volunteers, weather, the course, and every aspect of this race.
