50 States Marathon Club Newsletter, Vol. 1, Issue 2
Proudly supporting 345 members, as of 1/3/02!

Reunion Report, Tulsa, Oklahoma.
212 starters began the 2001 Oklahoma Marathon, in near perfect weather.  They represented 48 states, and at least four other countries – Canada, Germany, England, and Sweden.  There was a social hour before the meeting.  Over 100 of these runners made the membership meeting the night before the race, where 2001’s first and second round finishers were recognized with a huge acrylic trophy with their name and the date engraved on it.  The first person to register from each state got a “Representing....Michigan” set of shirts – singlet and short sleeved shirt, and was invited to participate in a group photo on race morning.  We had a great starting ceremony with the national anthem and each runner releasing a balloon into the sky.  Bob (Race Director) and Kathy Lehew hosted Club members at a feast at their home after the race.  Over $5,000 was raised for the Rick Worley Scholarship Fund.  Thank you, Bob and Kathy, for a wonderful weekend.

Upcoming Reunions:
Ocala, Florida, 2/3/02 (website:  www.ocalamarathon.com); and the Wyoming Marathon, (website:  www.angelfire.com/wy2/marathon) 5/26/02, have been designated as our next two reunion runs.  Come join us!  Note that Wyoming is the only marathon in that state.
We are looking for suggestions for future reunions marathons.  There will be one reunion each quarter.  We will distribute them as evenly as possible across the continental U.S.

Remembering Joyce…
>From Ray Boytim:

If you are in the Houston area in early March, try the Houston Derby Dash 5k, whose proceeds go to benefit the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.  If you click on “See why it is so personal to us here!”  You’ll find a great writeup and picture of Joyce Boytim, who passed away this year of a rare lung cancer.  The Bayou City Road Runners are dedicating this annual race to Joyce. The race will be held on March 2, 2002, at the Sam Houston Race Park. This is the last race that Joyce ran and it is also the race where she started having breathing problems.

A Painful Subject:
We like to believe that everyone is in this Club because they enjoy running and that they are always honorable.  Occasionally we receive reports that someone has cut a course, has not corrected an early start time, or otherwise falsified a record.  The Board has been discussing what action we should take if this occurs.  Here are our current thoughts:
After a given number of logged complaints (x times?) a formal investigation is begun.
The member receives a warning after (X?) complaints.
We contact the race directors in question and ask them for input.
All complaints must be documented and verified by (X?) sources
Those who are proven to have falsified records will be removed from the Club.
Please forward your input to steveboone@aol.com.  Head your e-mail or letter “complaint issue.”

Florida in January – Florida Gulf Beaches Marathon – January 20, 2002
Featuring a flat, scenic course and perfect weather, this fast growing marathon is appealing to many runners in need of a midwinter break.  Last year’s marathon attracted 1,529 entrants (including relays) from 44 states and 13 countries, a huge increase from the inaugural run of 635 participants.
This year, organizers expect 2,000-3,000 entrants, including the 2-person relay and the new 10k race.
This marathon is NOT the official reunion run, scheduled for Ocala, Florida on February 3, 2002.  If you can only participate in one Florida marathon, we strongly encourage you to support our club’s activities at Ocala.  However, if you are considering additional marathons, several of our members have given this marathon a positive review.
For additional information, visit their website at:  www.floridamarathon.com or call 727-347-4440.
